The Missouri Public Service Commission is reminding residents that Missouri’s Hot Weather Law will be in effect from June 1 through September 30.
The law applies to residential customers of investor-owned utilities and prohibits the disconnection of electric or natural gas service due to non-payment if the energy is used for cooling purposes or to operate the sole cooling equipment in a home.
Under the regulation, utility companies regulated by the commission cannot disconnect service if the local National Weather Service forecast, issued between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m., predicts a temperature higher than 95 degrees or a heat index greater than 105 degrees within the next 24 hours.
Despite this protection, residents remain responsible for paying their utility bills.
Additional information about the Hot Weather Law is available on the Missouri Public Service Commission website or by calling the Missouri Public Service Commission Consumer Services hotline at 1-800-392-4211.
