Russia rejects attempt to politicize APEC forum

Moscow, May 23 (Prensa Latina) Russian Minister of Economic Development, Maxim Reshetnikov, today denounced the attempt to politicize the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC), which prevented the adoption of the final communiqué of the Bangkok meeting.

According to the Russian delegation, Reshetnikov highlighted Thailand’s effort to achieve consensus at the event in which the trade ministers of 21 economies in the region participated and stressed that 23 of the 24 points of the final document were approved.

“This means that APEC is still able to push the economic agenda forward. The only reason we haven’t reached consensus is that some economies have tried to politicize the forum”, he said.

Yesterday, the representatives of Australia, Canada, the United States, Japan and New Zealand left the plenary after the senior Russian official took the floor, in protest of the military operation of this country continues in Ukraine, Sputnik news agency reported.

The Moscow delegation pointed out that the same countries rejected the proposal by China and Russia to include in the final communique the call to continue cooperation on the APEC agenda.
