FIREARMS and ammunition are among the most commonly stolen items from farmland and agricultural properties in Victoria, police said as preparations for a farm security expo in Bendigo ramp up.

More than 280 burglaries were recorded, statewide, in the 12 months leading up to March. 

However, police believe many incidents of livestock and farm theft are under-reported. 

“We know the impact that these crimes can have on productivity, income and livelihoods in rural communities,” Inspector Paul Gardiner said.

“It’s important that we work together to prevent more people becoming victims of crime.”

Farming equipment, livestock, firearms and ammunition are among the most commonly stolen items from Victorian farmland and agricultural properties.

Inspector Gardiner said a farm security expo in Bendigo was a platform for farmers and the police to work together to minimise the risks involved in managing rural properties. 

The two-day event at Bendigo Stadium will feature presentations and displays about proactive measures and technology to improve farm security and safety. 

It will also offer farmers an opportunity to get a health check. 

Beyondblue, Bendigo Health and the City of Greater Bendigo are among the organisations involved in the expo, which is now in its second year.

More than 1000 people attended in 2016.

Inspector Gardiner encouraged any farmers who might be victims of farm crime or livestock theft to report it to police. 

“We have an Agricultural Liaison Officer program which is a collection of members across the state who have expert skills in investigating these types of crimes,” he said.  

The expo will run from 9am – 3pm on August 24 and 25 at Bendigo Stadium.
